The Tatras in Three Days: How Footwear Became My Key Ally in the Mountains
The High Tatras, part of the Carpathian range, are relatively young mountains with diverse landscapes. In just one day, you can journey from humid forests to rugged mountain peaks. The weather here is unpredictable: mornings can be sunny, while by midday, you might be battling rain and strong winds. This makes choosing the right footwear crucial for comfort and safety.
The Tatras are the closest mountains to Vilnius, and I've long wanted to explore them. I had only three days, so I brought two pairs of shoes: the Keen Newport H2 sandals with a protective rubber toe cap and the La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II.
The Keen Newport H2 sandals were my go-to for 80% of the routes. They are ideal for daily walking and easier trails. With a wide sole, they evenly distribute weight, which is essential for hiking. The rubber toe cap provided excellent protection from morning dew and accidental rock bumps.
For the more challenging sections, I wore the La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II. These shoes come with a Gore-Tex membrane, offering protection from snow, water, and moisture. They’re also well-suited for light climbing, thanks to their reliable toe box construction.
On the first day, I covered 22 km, the second day 30 km, and the third day 24 km. The terrain in the Tatras is diverse, ranging from green meadows to sharp mountains. Along the way, you encounter tree roots, streams, and rocky trails, making this a true endurance test for both body and shoes.
I learned a lot after completing the Orla Perc trail. A combination of adrenaline, physical exertion, and mental toughness pushed me to my limits. On such trails, every step matters, and your gear can determine your success or failure. That's why I approached my footwear selection with a practical mindset. I wore the Keen H2 for the base of the mountain, but when it came to traversing the ridge, the Ultra Raptors were my go-to, providing stability on all tricky sections. They were particularly useful in parts where light climbing was necessary.
In hiking, shoes are not just about comfort but a set of functions. They need to distribute weight properly, offer stability on different terrains, and protect from moisture. Gore-Tex membranes do a great job of keeping feet dry but can overheat in hot conditions. Ankle support is crucial when navigating rocky surfaces, where your feet constantly balance on uneven ground.
Another important tip: always protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen is a must for all exposed areas to avoid sunburn and heatstroke. Also, don't forget about socks. The best choice is seamless hiking or running socks made from moisture-wicking materials that dry quickly. These socks support your feet, reduce friction, and help prevent blisters.
The width of your shoes is another aspect people often overlook. Even a slight pinch can lead to discomfort or injury. Today’s footwear sizing allows for the perfect fit, whether you're hiking sandy trails or tackling alpine routes.
